25 Refreshing Summer Drinks to Cool Off Naturally

Summer has a way of slowing everything down.

The garden is buzzing with bees, baskets of fruit wait on the kitchen counter and the day’s chores seem a little lighter once the sun begins to sink below the trees. After hours spent pulling weeds, harvesting herbs or simply enjoying the warmth of the season, few things feel better than settling onto the porch with a cold drink in hand.

Some of the best summer memories are made in these quiet moments—a pitcher of lemonade shared with friends, a glass of sweet tea after working in the garden or a refreshing herbal drink made with ingredients gathered just steps from the back door.

This collection of refreshing summer drinks celebrates everything there is to love about the season. You’ll find garden-to-glass favorites made with fresh herbs, old-fashioned beverages that have stood the test of time, fruit-filled refreshers bursting with seasonal flavor and frozen treats perfect for the hottest days of the year.

These are the homemade summer drinks made for long afternoons, warm evenings and the simple joys of summer living.

If you’re only going to make one drink from this list, make it this one.

For me, Strawberry Basil Lemonade is the drink that announces the arrival of summer. The first ripe strawberries are appearing at farm stands, the herb garden is finally thriving and the days are long enough to spend entire evenings outdoors.

Most varieties of basil work beautifully in this recipe, but my personal favorite is tulsi, also known as holy basil. Its sweet, slightly spicy flavor creates absolute magic when paired with ripe strawberries and fresh lemon juice.

A large pitcher of Strawberry Basil Lemonade is perfect for backyard gatherings, porch sitting or simply cooling off after a morning spent in the garden.

Garden-to-Glass Summer Drinks

One of the best parts of summer is stepping outside and finding the ingredients for a refreshing drink already growing in the garden. From cooling mint and fragrant basil to juicy berries and sun-ripened peaches, these garden-to-glass summer drinks celebrate the flavors of the season at their freshest.

If you’re looking for refreshing summer drinks that make use of homegrown herbs, edible flowers and seasonal produce, these are some of my favorites.

1. Cucumber Mint Cooler

Few combinations feel more refreshing on a hot afternoon than cucumber and mint. Light, crisp, and incredibly cooling, this drink is perfect after a morning spent weeding, harvesting, or tending the garden. If mint has taken over one of your beds—as it often does—this is a delicious way to put it to use.

Best for: Cooling down after a day in the garden.

2. Strawberry Basil Lemonade

For me, this is the drink that signals summer has truly arrived. Sweet strawberries and fragrant basil create a garden-fresh twist on traditional lemonade that’s both familiar and unexpectedly special. If you grow tulsi (holy basil), its sweet, slightly spicy flavor pairs beautifully with strawberries.

Best for: Backyard gatherings, porch sitting and celebrating the season’s first strawberries.

You’ll find the full recipe in the featured section above.

3. Blackberry Sage Spritzer

Blackberries bring rich sweetness while sage adds an earthy note that keeps this sparkling drink from becoming overly sugary. The combination feels both rustic and sophisticated, making it a wonderful way to showcase two often-overlooked garden ingredients.

Best for: Summer dinners on the patio and casual entertaining.

4. Lavender Lemonade

A cottage garden classic, lavender lemonade captures the essence of summer in a glass. The floral notes of lavender soften the tartness of lemon, creating a refreshing summer drink that’s as beautiful to serve as it is to sip.

Best for: Garden parties, bridal showers and slow afternoons on the porch.

5. Peach Rosemary Iced Tea

When peaches are at their peak, few homemade summer drinks feel more seasonal than this one. The sweetness of ripe peaches pairs surprisingly well with rosemary, creating an herbal iced tea that’s refreshing, fragrant and memorable. If you pair them with a BBQ….grilling the peaches first brings out the most amazing subtle smoky flavor.  Try it!

Best for: Late summer evenings and using up an abundant peach harvest.

Grow Your Own Summer Drink Garden

One of the best things about homemade summer drinks is how many of the ingredients can be grown right in your own backyard, raised bed, or even a few containers on the patio. If you’d like to create your own garden-to-glass drinks, start with these easy-to-grow favorites:

  • Mint — Perfect for coolers, iced teas and infused waters.
  • Basil or Tulsi (Holy Basil) — Adds a fresh herbal flavor to lemonades and fruit drinks.
  • Lavender — A cottage garden favorite that brings delicate floral notes to summer beverages. If using for drinks, be sure to grow culinary lavender; ornamental varieties can have a more bitter flavor.
  • Chamomile — Wonderful for soothing herbal iced teas.
  • Rosemary — Pairs beautifully with peaches, citrus and sparkling drinks.
  • Strawberries — One of the most versatile fruits for homemade summer drinks.
  • Blackberries — Excellent in spritzers, shrubs and fruit refreshers.
  • Roses — Fragrant petals can be used to create beautiful cottage garden-inspired beverages.

Even a small herb garden can provide enough ingredients to enjoy refreshing summer drinks all season long.

Old-Fashioned Summer Drinks Worth Bringing Back

There is a reason so many people are rediscovering traditional recipes and forgotten homemaking skills. In a world filled with convenience foods and store-bought drinks, there is something deeply satisfying about making simple refreshments the way previous generations did.

Long before refrigerators, sports drinks and soda filled every grocery aisle, families relied on seasonal ingredients, garden harvests and time-tested recipes to stay cool during the hottest months of the year. These old-fashioned summer drinks prove that sometimes the simplest ideas are the ones worth preserving.

6. Switchel (Haymaker’s Punch)

Sometimes called Haymaker’s Punch, switchel was a favorite among farmers working long hours in the summer heat. Made with vinegar, ginger, water and a touch of sweetener, it may sound unusual at first, but the combination is surprisingly refreshing and has been enjoyed for generations.

Best for: Hot afternoons in the garden and anyone curious about historic homestead recipes.

7. Raspberry Shrub

Before refrigeration made fruit preservation easy, shrubs offered a clever way to capture seasonal flavors. This tangy mixture of raspberries, sugar and vinegar creates a concentrated syrup that becomes wonderfully refreshing when mixed with sparkling water. Like many traditional preservation recipes, shrubs taste even better after a few days in the refrigerator.

Best for: Using up an abundant berry harvest and adding a touch of vintage charm to summer gatherings.

8. Mint Julep Mocktail

Fresh mint and crushed ice have been helping people beat the summer heat for centuries. This alcohol-free version keeps all the cooling flavor of the classic Southern drink while making it suitable for the whole family.

Best for: Porch sitting, family gatherings and slow summer evenings.

Cottage Garden Sippers

If you’ve ever dreamed of wandering through a cottage garden with a basket on your arm, these drinks are for you.

Inspired by old-fashioned roses, flowering herbs, and the kind of gardens that seem to spill effortlessly across picket fences, these refreshing summer drinks capture the romance of summer in bloom. Delicate floral flavors, fragrant herbs and beautiful colors make them perfect for garden parties, afternoon tea or simply adding a little everyday magic to an ordinary afternoon.

9. Rose Petal Lemonade

Few drinks feel more cottage garden-inspired than rose petal lemonade. Bright lemon and fragrant rose create a beautiful balance of floral and citrus flavors, resulting in a drink that feels both elegant and timeless.

Best for: Garden parties, bridal showers and afternoons spent among the flowers.

10. Chamomile Iced Tea

Chamomile is often associated with cozy evenings and bedtime tea, but it makes a wonderfully refreshing iced drink as well. Its gentle apple-like flavor is subtle, calming and perfectly suited to slow summer days. Fresh or dried flowers both work for this refreshing tea.

Best for: Reading on the porch, quiet evenings and moments when you want to slow down.

11. Violet Syrup Soda

There is something undeniably whimsical about a glass of violet syrup soda. The delicate floral flavor and jewel-toned color make it feel like something that belongs in a storybook rather than a modern kitchen.

Best for: Spring and summer gatherings, fairy-tale garden aesthetics and impressing guests.

12. Strawberry Rose Cooler

Sweet strawberries and soft floral rose notes come together in a drink that feels equal parts refreshing and romantic. It’s the sort of beverage that looks beautiful served in a mason jar or vintage glass pitcher surrounded by fresh flowers.

Best for: Cottage garden picnics, brunches and celebrating the beauty of summer.

Fruit-Filled Summer Favorites

There is a brief window each summer when fruit seems to be everywhere. Farmers’ markets overflow with peaches and berries, watermelons fill roadside stands and kitchen counters somehow end up covered in more fresh produce than you know what to do with.

These refreshing summer drinks make the most of the season’s sweetest flavors. Bright, colorful and naturally appealing to both kids and adults, they’re the kinds of drinks that belong at backyard barbecues, family picnics and afternoons spent running through sprinklers.

13. Watermelon Agua Fresca

Simple, hydrating and naturally sweet, watermelon agua fresca is one of the easiest homemade summer drinks you can make. A squeeze of lime brightens the flavor while letting the watermelon remain the star of the show.

Best for: Hot afternoons, pool days and using up an oversized watermelon.

14. Cherry Limeade

Sweet cherries and tart lime create a vibrant drink that feels both nostalgic and refreshing. The bold color alone makes it a favorite for summer gatherings.

Best for: Backyard cookouts, Fourth of July celebrations and family get-togethers.

15. Peach Lemonade

Nothing says summer quite like a ripe peach. Blending peaches into homemade lemonade creates a smooth, fruity drink that captures the flavor of peak peach season in every sip.

Best for: Farmers’ market weekends and late-summer peach harvests.

blueberry lemon water

16. Blueberry Lemon Water

Sometimes the simplest drinks are the most refreshing. Fresh blueberries and lemon slices infuse water with subtle flavor, making it an easy option to keep in the refrigerator throughout the day.

Best for: Everyday hydration and encouraging kids to drink more water.

17. Pineapple Mint Refresher

Sweet tropical pineapple and cooling mint create a drink that feels like a mini vacation in a glass. The bright flavors make it especially welcome during the hottest weeks of the year.

Best for: Summer parties, outdoor entertaining and pretending you’re somewhere tropical.

Porch-Friendly Coolers

Some drinks aren’t meant to be rushed.

They’re meant for porch swings and rocking chairs, for evenings when the chores are finally done and the garden settles into the soft glow of sunset. They’re the drinks you carry outside after dinner, sip while listening to the cicadas and refill when a conversation stretches longer than expected.

These refreshing summer drinks are simple, familiar and perfectly suited to the slow rhythm of summer evenings.

18. Sweet Tea

In the South, where I live, sweet tea is practically a religious experience. Every family has its own passed-down recipe, and they are all convinced theirs is the very best. “Friendly” rivalries can—and do—exist when the topic of sweet tea comes up.

While recipes may differ, most Southerners can agree on a few important rules: add the sugar while the tea is still hot, throw in a pinch of baking soda to help smooth out any bitterness and chill the tea before serving. (Whatever you do, don’t water down the whole pitcher with ice.)

Served ice cold and poured into a mason jar or favorite glass, sweet tea remains a timeless Southern tradition that never seems to go out of style.

Best for: Front porch sitting, family gatherings and watching the fireflies come out.

19. Citrus Iced Tea

Fresh lemon and orange slices add brightness and color to traditional iced tea. It’s a simple upgrade that feels a little special without requiring any extra effort.

Best for: Warm evenings, weekend barbecues and sharing a pitcher with friends

20. Sparkling Berry Refresher

A handful of fresh berries and sparkling water transform an ordinary drink into something festive. Light, bubbly and colorful, it’s one of those refreshing summer drinks that feels appropriate for both everyday enjoyment and special occasions.

Best for: Summer brunches, porch gatherings and celebrating small moments.

21. Homemade Orangeade

Softer and less tart than lemonade, orangeade has a sunny sweetness that feels especially fitting during the height of summer. It’s simple, nostalgic and surprisingly refreshing on a hot day.

Best for: Slow afternoons, porch swings and sharing with the whole family.

Frozen Treat Drinks

Some summer days are so hot that even the shade feels warm.

The garden wilts by noon, the dogs are stretched out under the porch and stepping outside feels like opening the door to an oven. These are the days when a glass of iced tea isn’t quite enough and only something frosty, slushy and ice-cold will do.

These frozen summer drinks blur the line between beverage and dessert, offering the kind of refreshing relief that makes you almost welcome the possibility of a brain freeze.

22. Frozen Strawberry Lemonade

Bright strawberries, tart lemonade and plenty of ice come together in this classic frozen treat. Sweet, tangy and wonderfully cold, it’s hard to imagine a better antidote to a sweltering afternoon.

Best for: Heat waves, pool days, and cooling off after working in the garden.

23. Peach Slush

When summer peaches are frozen and blended until smooth, they transform into a simple treat that tastes like sunshine in a glass. Naturally sweet and incredibly refreshing, it’s one of the easiest frozen drinks to make.

Best for: Peak peach season and afternoons when it’s simply too hot to cook.

24. Watermelon Slushie

Watermelon is already one of summer’s most refreshing fruits, and freezing it only makes it better. Blended with a squeeze of lime, this icy drink delivers maximum cooling power with minimal effort.

Best for: Triple-digit temperatures, backyard play days and instant relief from the heat.

25. Frozen Berry Cooler

Mixed berries, fruit juice and ice create a vibrant frozen drink that’s equal parts refreshing and satisfying. The sweet-tart berry flavor makes it a favorite with both kids and adults.
